Docent & Volunteering

BEING A DOCENT AT THE CAPE MAY COUNTY PARK & ZOO

"Docent" comes from the Latin word "Docere" meaning "to teach".  Help us inspire people young and old to respect, value and care for the natural world through animals, classes, camps, education stations, guided tours, special events, and adult lectures.

Below are a variety of ways in which individuals or groups can help within the park and zoo system:

Zoo Information Docents
Many docents are needed to walk the Zoo and interact with our visitors. We need able minded, friendly and approachable individuals to answer visitor’s questions and give direction throughout the Zoo.

Education Docents
Education docents perform many tasks to aid our education department. Examples of work performed: answer questions for visitors, discuss particular animals with visitors, perform educational programs, assist with enrichment projects (minor building, painting, crafts, etc.), assist with special events (work game stations, informational tables with artifacts or live animals.), care for education collection, animal husbandry issues, etc.

Special Events Volunteer
Event volunteers usually work one day themed events that require large numbers of individuals such as: Boo at the Zoo, Santa's workshop, Easter EggstravanganZoo, Sleepovers, Princess and Pirate Days, and the Annual Earth Day Celebration. Examples of work performed: assist with crowd control, registration, information stations, fund raising, craft activities, set-up & clean-up.

Parks & Grounds Volunteer
Grounds volunteers can help in a variety of different ways including: gardening, trial maintenance, building projects and social group projects to name a few. Park volunteers can be very helpful throughout many of our four county-wide parks.

Docents/Volunteers are subject to background checks and must be 18 years of age or older.  For more information call 609-465-5271 or email info@cmczoo.com
