The primary mission of the Correctional Division is to operate an efficient, effective and safe County Correctional Center for the inmates incarcerated in the Center, for the personnel employed in the Center, and for the citizens of Cape May County. The philosophy of the Correctional Center is to provide for the health, safety, welfare and security of those entrusted to our care and custody. Those in our custody shall be offered all educational, vocational, religious and substance abuse services, privileges and protection with an emphasis placed on self-improvement and rehabilitation. Specific programs include the (SLAP) Sheriff's Labor Assistance Program, (EMP) Electronic Monitoring Program, GED Program, Religious Services, Bible study, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Anger Management and Relapse Services, etc.
To accomplish this mission and maintain the philosophy there are approximately 105 sworn officers and civilian personnel that work in the Correctional Division. These professional personnel are comprised of a staff of Senior Officers, an Administration Section, an Inmate Services Department, an Operations Office, a Medical Department, a Food Service Department, a Maintenance Department, and four squads of Correctional Officers.
A new Correctional Center has been constructed and opened for service on January 14th 2019. The new Correctional Center incorporates the latest in correctional center technology and design and can hold over 300 inmates. The new Center is located at the same location as the former jail on 18 acres of property at Exit 11 on the Garden State Parkway, East on Crest Haven Road, in the town of Cape May Court House in Middle Township, Cape May County, New Jersey. Using eligible inmates identified by the Court, the Correctional Division provides programs and services to the County of Cape May. The Correctional Division is also responsible for the Alternative to Incarceration Programs (AIP) which includes the Electronic Monitoring Program (EMP) and the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP). The SLAP personnel work in the County Park, and provide routine outside services around the county grounds. The Correctional Center also has a work release program if ordered by the Courts.
The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) has accredited the Correctional Center Medical Department four times over the past twelve years. This is a private organization that focuses on the health care and medical services provided to the inmates within the Center. Finally, it must be also noted that the Correctional Center has successfully completed all annual inspections conducted by the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC).

Sexual Abuse and Excessive Force and (PREA) Prison Rape Elimination Act
Consistent with the law, the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual abuse, sexual harassment and excessive force against inmates. Zero tolerance for the purpose of sexual abuse and sexual harassment committed by an inmate or staff member means that it is strictly prohibited, thoroughly investigated, subject to disciplinary action, and will not be tolerated. All third party reports will be investigated.
When the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office/Cape May Prosecutor’s Office conducts its investigations into allegations of sexual abuse, it shall do so promptly, thoroughly, and objectively for all allegations including third-party and anonymous reports or reports from an outside entity designated by the facility administration as the entity who shall provide a staffed hot line as a means for inmates to externally report incidents of sexual abuse.
