Due to COVID restrictions the Shelter is not taking new volunteers. Please check back here as we will post as soon as we can begin to train new volunteers. Thank you for your understanding.
Volunteers play an integral role at the Cape May County Animal Shelter. There are many tasks they do daily at the shelter such as:
- Cage and kennel cleaning
- Cat socializing and exercising
- Dog walking
- Special events
Interested residents 14-17 years of age may volunteer, however they must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult while volunteering. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff to provide supervision for junior volunteers.
Those interested in volunteering must first attend a mandatory New Volunteer Orientation at the shelter. Orientations are held on the below listed dates at the shelter unless otherwise noted (*). Orientation is informal and is your opportunity to learn if volunteering at this shelter is a good fit for you. Prior to attending orientation please make sure to have a tour of the kennels and cat rooms at the Shelter during open public hours which are 1:30 - 4:00pm, seven days a week. This will enable you to have a better understanding of the protocols and issues as they are explained and discussed during the orientation.
Pre-registration is required. Contact us to pre-register:

The shelter is an official adoption partner of PetSmart Charities, Inc. at the PetSmart store in Rio Grande, New Jersey. Volunteers make the animals comfortable with clean cages and fresh food in the morning (7-9 a.m.) and evening (5-9 p.m.). Volunteers also man an information and adoption table at the store on Wednesdays (6-8 p.m.), Saturdays (2-4 p.m.) and Sundays (2-4 p.m.). Read more about our volunteer activities at PetSmart.
