Rutgers Cooperative Extension Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) will hold a Back to School Bash as part of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 5:30 to 7p.m. at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, New Jersey.
This special Back to School program will provide grandparents with valuable information to help them prepare their grandchildren for the new school year. Plus there will be an informative presentation by Detective Kevin McLaughlin, of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, on security measures in place at area schools to keep children safe. Additionally, each child will receive a new backpack full of school supplies donated by the Cape May Oceanside Community Club. Marilou Rochford, FCHS Educator, said, “We are excited about this program because it provides our grandparents with timely information on immunizations, homework help resources and other topics to help ensure a successful start to the new school year. Plus through the generosity of the community, the grandchildren receive new back to school essentials.” Rochford added, “ New this year, we will have a guest speaker from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office who will update our grandparents about important safety measures.”
Childcare will be provided for the grandchildren. A light supper for the grandparents and grandchildren begins promptly at 5:30p.m. and the program will follow at 6p.m. There is no charge for this program, however, please call Marian at (609) 465-5115, ext. 609 to register or for more information.
FCHS offers educational support group programs for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren throughout the year. The programs provide an opportunity to meet with other grandparents and caring professionals to discuss the emotional, legal and financial issues of this important topic. In addition to the monthly program sessions, FCHS also hosts “Coffee Fridays” which allow for a more relaxed, informal exchange of ideas.
Support for this program is provided by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Cape May County Department of Aging and Disability Services, the Cape May Oceanside Community Club, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
