[ARCHIVED] Cape May County Department of Health Announces 2018 Flu Clinic Schedule

Cape May Court House - The Department of Health will be hosting their free flu clinics throughout the County from September through October. Available this year are regular flu shots, high-dose flu shots and flu mist vaccine. High-dose flu shots will be offered at senior center clinics while supplies last. Dates are listed below and on the county calendar, www.capemaycountynj.gov, and Cape May County Department of Health Facebook page. Feel free to call our hotline at (609) 463-6581 with any questions.

“Getting your flu shot can prevent the flu, reduce illness, doctors’ visits, missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalization. The year’s flu vaccine helps protect others, such as young children, and those that have a low immune system. “Help protect yourself and others by getting vaccinated,” stated Kevin Thomas, Health Officer Cape May County Department of Health.

Center for Disease Control defines influenza, or seasonal flu, as a contagious illness that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu is spread by droplets, which are made when an individual coughs, sneezes or talks. The droplets can land on surfaces or an individual, which can result in the spread of the infection. Individuals at the highest risk of developing flu related complications are individuals 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, pregnant women, individuals with low immune system, and young children. Signs and symptoms of the flu include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny or Stuffy Nose
  • Muscle or Body Aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (very tired)

The flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. The flu shot is recommended for everyone six months and older, and mandatory for children 6 months to 59 months of age that attend daycare or preschool. It is also important to wash your hands, staying home if sick, and covering cough and sneezes. Make it a habit to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces in your home, school or office.
